Diabetic Retinopathy Grading Course

This course has been designed for individuals who wish to develop and improve their knowledge in assessing retinal images for diabetic retinopathy. It will help you acquire the skills required to identify the appearance and significance of retinal damage caused by diabetes, and you will learn how to identify and reduce risks associated with diabetes in the development of sight threatening retinopathy. It is appropriate for personnel employed outside of the United Kingdom within international health institutions undertaking digital diabetic retinopathy screening.
The teaching is provided by Gloucestershire Research & Education Group and participants will receive an in-house certificate from the Gloucestershire Research & Education Group, on successful completion.

This course introduces students to the features of diabetic retinopathy, their appearance on fundus images, and the classifications used to assess retinal images. During the final week, students are required to complete an online, formal exam, which they must pass in order to be certificated.
On successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Competently grade a series of images of the retina to demonstrate an ability to distinguish the presence or absence of lesions of diabetic retinopathy.
- Competently grade a series of images of the retina to demonstrate an ability to distinguish the severity of diabetic retinopathy
- Competently grade a series of images of the retina to demonstrate an ability to distinguish other abnormalities of the retina and blood vessels of the retina that may be seen on diabetic retinopathy screening images.
- Identify other pathology that commonly affects the retina and/or blood vessels that may be seen on diabetic retinopathy screening images and show an understanding of the risk factors associated with them
There are no specific entry requirements for this course, however we advise that all students:
- Are able to use computer systems and must have access to the internet to complete their distance learning
- Have sufficient competence in English to understand the course
- Work within a health institution and have the opportunity to assess images for diabetic retinopathy
Please note: Students working within the English National Screening Programme are required to complete the Health Screeners Diploma, and therefore are not usually accepted on to this course.
