Vision Science Courses

Gloucestershire Research & Education Group

This is a series of short courses that have been designed to provide an introduction to vision science. There are four courses in total, designed to be studied alongside each other to help students understand context and how examinations and procedures are interlinked. The courses available are:

  • Visual Acuity
  • Visual Pathway
  • Visual Fields
  • Testing Colour Vision and Pupil Size 

The teaching is provided by Gloucestershire Research & Education Group and participants will receive an in-house certificate from the Gloucestershire Research & Education Group, on successful completion.


Visual Acuity


Explore different types of visual acuity tests used in clinical settings.


Learning Outcomes

  • Recognise the importance of visual acuity testing
  • Understand the different methods of testing visual acuity
  • Determine if you are able to test a patients visual acuity or whether a referral to another department or service provider is required


Visual Pathway


Explore visual pathway, and how ocular structures work together allowing us to see.


Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the relationship between the eye and the brain
  • Develop an understanding of how the anatomy of the eye and visual pathway relate to other systems in the body.




Visual Fields


Explore perimetry, visual field testing and what a visual field report looks like.


Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the indicators for testing a patient's visual field
  • Understand why different styles of visual field tests are undertaken
  • Recognise a visual field report and have a basic understanding of what each of the plots represent

Testing Colour Vision and Pupil Size


Explore how colour vision is assessed and tested for defects (RAPD).


Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the causes of colour-blindness and why we test for it
  • Understand RAPD and why we test for it.

There are no entry requirements for this course.

It is suitable for anyone who would like to gain and improve their knowledge of this topic.

Students have 2 weeks to complete each course. Students studying all four courses will have 8 weeks in total. It is delivered on our online learning system, and to be certificated, students must successfully pass an end of module online assessment.

There are no specific start dates, students can register anytime.

Course fees are payable in advance.
