University Diploma in Optical Coherence Tomography Interpretation

This qualification has been designed to meet the needs of individuals who interpret OCT scans to inform their clinical practice, covering a systematic approach to OCT Interpretation and urgency of referral for different conditions. It aims, through directed learning and structured assessments:
- To provide a detailed knowledge of the features of clinical disease and common abnormalities detected in OCT scans
- To show how to operate in situations of varying complexity and predictability requiring the application of a wide range of techniques and information to interpret OCT scans
- To provide training in the interpretation of OCT scans and OCT angiography; to interpret relevant clinical information in the management of patients with anterior and/or posterior segment disease of the eye
It is provided by Gloucestershire Research & Education Group in partnership with the University of Gloucestershire as the awarding body, and is suitable for individuals who are employed in health institutions within the UK who interpret Optical Coherence Tomography scans.
This course can be studied individually, or can be combined with our Certificate of Higher Education in OCT Capture to form a Foundation Degree in OCT.
This course has changed the way I examine the images of all my patients. Things are also a lot easier for me to see. It has also given me a tremendous amount of confidence whenever I examine a patient. Before the course, I would worry a lot and think is it okay or is the patient gonna be okay, but after the course, I can easily make a decision to think "ah there's nothing to worry" and now I can also confidently support my decision to refer patients.

Students will complete five compulsory modules, plus one optional module, which are all 8 weeks in duration. Students will be assessed using a combination of the following methods:
- Online exams
- One presentation
- Portfolio/logbook of OCT scans interpreted

All students must meet the following criteria:
- Hold a minimum of a Level 4 qualification in a health related subject
- Be employed in a clinical context and have the opportunity to undertake OCT interpretation
- Have a minimum of 6 months experience in OCT capture or OCT interpretation
- For students whose first language is not English, have documentary evidence of sufficient competence in English e.g. IELTS 6.0 overall in both reading and writing

You will study your chosen award as a distance learning course whilst in full or part time employment as a healthcare professional. You will be working within a health institution or for a private provider undertaking optical coherence tomography interpretation. The course is distance learning, this will require students to access and work through study materials online, and then to continue the application of learning in clinical practice.
All modules are 8 weeks in duration and assessment includes; online exams, one presentation, and submission of a portfolio/logbook of OCT scans interpreted, verified by a clinical assessor.
