Intravitreal Injections

Gloucestershire Research & Education Group

This course has been designed for individuals administering intravitreal injections, to support their knowledge, skills, and professional development in intravitreal injections.

The teaching is provided by Gloucestershire Research & Education Group and has been developed in collaboration with subject matter experts working in this field. Participants will receive an in-house certificate from the Gloucestershire Research & Education Group, on successful completion.

The topics covered in this training include:

  • Intravitreal Pharmacological Agents
  • Intravitreal Injection Technique and Best Practice
  • Complications of Intravitreal Injections
  • Intravitreal Procedure Tutorials
  • Communication Throughout the Procedure

Each topic has its own set of learning outcomes within the course, which can be found in the teaching materials. The following provides an overview of what you should be able to do by the end of the course:

  • Identify the pharmacological agents commonly used in intravitreal treatment, and describe their mechanism and role in treating retinal disease.
  • Understand the intravitreal injection procedure, including patient preparation, equipment, pain management, aseptic technique and safe administration.
  • Describe the potential complications associated with intravitreal injections, including recognition, management and reporting of adverse events.
  • Develop the skills to recognise and assess safe intravitreal injection technique, including appropriate equipment, aseptic practice, pre- and post-injection care, and common errors.
  • Understand the importance of clear, compassionate communication before, during, and after the procedure, helping to support patient understanding, comfort, and confidence.

Students should be employed in a clinical context. Ideally, students will routinely administer intravitreal injections as part of their role. However, the course is also suitable for students who work alongside clinicians performing intravitreal injections or who expect to undertake the procedure as part of their future role.

We also advise that students:

  • Able to use computer systems and must have (ideally broadband) access to the Internet (www) to complete their distance learning.
  • Have sufficient competence in English to understand the course
